Type Locality and Naming

Part of the Tien Shan complex. B.I. Pinhasov, 1985 (145, pp.15-17). Adopted in the Chatkal-Kuramin series of sheets m-1:50000, 1998.

Synonym: Upper Tianshan Series, Верхнетяньшаньская сер.


Lithology and Thickness

Brownish molasse formation, corresponding to the stage of intense and sharply differentiated tectonic development of the orogen, humidification and cooling of the climate, and the emergence of a constantly active hydrographic network. Clays, siltstone (aleurolites), sandstones, gravelites, conglomerates. Thickness 2000-3000m.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Unconformably overlies the Middle TienShan Gr or discordantly on older mountains and Paleozoic.

Upper contact

Discordantly overlain by ancient Quaternary deposits of the Sokh Gr and Nanay Gr complexes.

Regional extent

Intermontane depressions of the Tien-Shan, foothill zone.
